How long does a sump pump last?
Seven to 10 years is typical, less if it runs constantly. Age matters more than appearance, so if you cannot remember when it went in, it is probably time to plan a replacement. Replacing on schedule is cheaper.
How do I test my sump pump?
Pour a 5-gallon bucket of water into the pit slowly and watch. The float should rise, the pump should start, the water should drop, and the pump should shut off cleanly without chattering. Do that twice a year.
Do I really need a battery backup sump pump?
If losing the basement would be expensive, yes. Storms that overload a pit are the same storms that cut power, and a primary pump with no backup is offline exactly when it matters. It is the cheapest insurance available.
Why does my sump pump run constantly?
Either the water table is genuinely high, the float is stuck, or the check valve is letting discharged water fall back into the pit. The last one is common and simple to correct. Constant running kills pumps fast.
Where should a sump pump discharge?
