Sewer Line Repair & Replacement
SEWER LINE REPAIR & REPLACEMENT IN Reedsburg, WI.
In most Wisconsin municipalities the sewer lateral from the house to the main belongs to the property owner, not the utility. Ernstmeyer Plumbing Co. LLC handles sewer line repair and replacement across Reedsburg, WI, and nearby Baraboo and Lake Delton. Every job starts by finding exactly where the line has failed rather than guessing at which of the four usual failures you have.

THE SYMPTOM IS THE SAME. THE FIX IS NOT.
Roots, a bellied section holding water, an offset joint, and a collapsed run of clay tile all show up the same way inside the house: a main line that backs up. They need four different repairs at four different prices, and pricing a sewer job before you know which one you are dealing with is guessing with your money.
So we find the failure and confirm the cause before we quote. You get a repair matched to what has actually gone wrong, not a full replacement sold on a hunch. Nothing here is taken on faith.
- Failure located and confirmed before we quote
- Spot repairs where the line allows
- Skid loader excavation and site restoration
- Free, no-obligation written estimates
SEWER LINE REPAIR & REPLACEMENT
ROOTS FIND EVERY JOINT EVENTUALLY.
Older neighborhoods here still run on clay tile laid in short sections, and every one of those joints is a place a root can reach moisture. Once inside, roots grow into a mat that catches paper and grease until the line stops draining. Replacing the affected run with solid pipe is the only repair that ends the cycle, and locating the intrusion tells us which section that is.
BURIED PIPE HERE NEVER STOPS MOVING.
Freeze and thaw cycles work on buried pipe every year, and a lateral that was dead straight in 1975 can carry a low spot today. Add sandy stretches that shift under load and clay pockets that hold water against the pipe, and you get the two failures we see most here: bellies that trap solids and joints that pull apart slowly. Both are failures we have opened up many times around here.
NOTHING UNDER A SAUK COUNTY YARD SURPRISES US ANYMORE.
Clay tile, Orangeburg, cast iron, and PVC all behave differently underground, and we have dug up all four in this county. Knowing what is likely down there before the first shovel goes in shapes how we price the job and how much lawn ends up disturbed. Thadd Ernstmeyer carries Wisconsin Master Plumber license 996751 and runs our excavation himself. Guesswork gets expensive underground.
WHAT A SOUND SEWER LATERAL IS WORTH
NO MORE BACKUPS
A line without roots, bellies, or breaks simply drains. The floor drain stops being something you check after heavy rain, and laundry day stops being a risk.
NO CONTAMINATION CLEANUP
Sewage in a basement is a health problem and a restoration bill at the same time. Correcting the line removes the mechanism that puts it there in the first place.
AN END TO RECURRING PROBLEMS
Cutting roots back every spring costs more than the repair within a few years and never fixes the pipe. Replacing the failed section ends the cycle instead of postponing it.
A CLEAN SALE INSPECTION
Buyers increasingly scope the lateral before closing. A documented repair with video on file removes a negotiation point that can otherwise cost thousands at the table.
YOUR YARD PUT BACK
Excavation does not have to leave a scar. Careful trenching, proper compaction, and topsoil returned to grade mean the lawn recovers in a season rather than staying a rut.
DECADES OF SERVICE LIFE
Modern PVC laid at proper slope with sealed joints does not admit roots and does not shift the way old tile did. This is a repair measured in decades, not years.
WHAT WE REPAIR
OUR SEWER LINE WORK
Six services cover the sewer work we take on, from a first look with a camera to a full lateral replacement with the yard restored. The video always comes before the quote.

REPLACEMENT
Full Sewer Lateral Replacement
Where the line has failed along its length, the whole run comes out and new PVC goes in at correct slope with proper bedding. Cleanouts get added where none existed.

EXCAVATION
Excavation and Site Restoration
Our own skid loader means no waiting on a subcontractor and no second mobilization charge. Spoil gets managed, the trench gets compacted properly, and topsoil returns to grade. Lawns recover the same season.

BELLIES
Belly and Offset Joint Correction
A low spot holding water or a joint that has pulled apart will keep collecting solids no matter what else is done. We regrade the run on proper bedding so the line drains the way it was meant to.

ROOTS
Root Damaged Section Replacement
Where roots have opened a joint or cracked a run of tile, the affected section comes out and solid pipe goes in. Removing the pipe the roots got into is what stops them coming back.

SPOT REPAIR
Sectional Sewer Repair
When one joint or a short crushed run is the whole problem, there is no reason to replace the entire lateral. We open a small area, replace the failed section, and close it back up.

THE WORD ON OUR WORK
WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY.
Sewer work is the kind people dread booking and are relieved to have finished. What we hear afterward is usually about the yard: how little of it got torn up, and how quickly the grass came back over the trench line.
★★★★★
I was thoroughly impressed by the remarkable level of care and foresight shown throughout the entire experience. Every stage reflected a deep understanding of what makes a process truly effective and enjoyable. The final outcome was exceptional and left me with complete satisfaction.

★★★★★
Many plumbers to chose from, but the honest, friendly, knowledgeable approach is hard to beat. They have helped me out many times after being introduced during a 4000 sqft home build a few years back.

Common Questions
frequently asked
questions.
Sewer questions homeowners ask once something has already backed up, plus the ones worth asking well before that. Send anything this list does not cover through the contact page.
How do I know if my sewer line is the problem?
Multiple fixtures backing up at once, gurgling in a tub when the toilet flushes, or water at the basement floor drain all point at the main line rather than a single fixture. One slow sink usually does not.
How long does a sewer line last?
Clay tile and cast iron typically give 50 to 60 years, Orangeburg far less, and modern PVC considerably more. Age alone does not decide it; soil movement and root pressure matter as much. A camera settles the question.
Can a sewer line be repaired without digging up the whole yard?
Often, yes. If the camera shows one defect, we open a small area over that spot and leave the rest untouched. Full replacement is only warranted when the line has failed throughout. The video decides which applies here.
What causes a sewer line to belly?
Settling soil under the pipe, poor bedding when it was laid, or heavy loads above it. The pipe sags, solids collect in the low spot, and the line clogs there repeatedly. Only regrading the pipe fixes it properly.
Are tree roots always the cause of sewer problems?
No, though they are the most common. Grease buildup, flushed wipes, a collapsed section, and offset joints all cause the same backup. The camera separates them in one visit. Each one needs a completely different repair and price.
Should I get the sewer line scoped before buying a house?
Yes. It is the one defect a standard home inspection will not find and the one that costs the most to correct. Ernstmeyer Plumbing Co. LLC scopes laterals throughout Reedsburg, WI, before closings. The footage goes to you.
What should never be flushed if I have an older sewer line?
Wipes of any kind, even the ones labeled flushable, along with paper towels, feminine products, and grease poured down a sink. All of them catch on roots and rough joints and start a blockage. Older lines are least forgiving.
Why choose you for sewer line work?
Because we run the camera, the excavation, and the repair ourselves rather than subcontracting the dig. Ernstmeyer Plumbing Co. LLC works out of Reedsburg, WI, and you deal with one person from inspection through restoration. That keeps costs honest.

HOW WE WORK
HOW WE WORK FROM FAILURE TO CLOSED TRENCH, HERE IS HOW.
STEP 01
Confirm the Lateral Is the Problem
Multiple fixtures backing up at once points at the lateral rather than a fixture. We confirm that first, because the repair we quote depends on what the line itself is doing, not on the symptom inside the house.
STEP 02
Find Where It Has Failed
We work from the cleanout, the line's route, and the symptoms to determine what has gone wrong and where. That is what a repair gets priced against, so it happens before any number is quoted.
STEP 03
Locate the Defect Above Ground
A transmitter in the camera head lets us mark the exact spot and depth on the surface. That is the difference between a 4-foot trench and a torn-up yard. Marking takes minutes and saves hours.
STEP 04
Quote the Repair the Video Supports
You get a written price for the specific failure found, plus the alternative if you would rather replace more of the line while the ground is open. Any work that is not included in the original estimate will be added as a separate line item.
STEP 05
Dig, Replace, and Test
The trench opens only where it needs to. New pipe goes in on proper bedding at correct slope, then the line gets tested and inspected before anything is backfilled. Permits are handled by us.
STEP 06
Backfill, Compact, and Restore
Backfill goes in lifts and gets compacted so the trench does not sink over the winter. Topsoil returns to grade and the site gets raked out before we leave. Seeding is up to you.
